The surrounding area is bordered by two famous salt lagoons – Laguna Salada de Torrevieja (the pink lake) and Laguna de La Mata. These areas are a protected natural park and an important habitat for birdlife. The pink coloration of the lake is caused by microorganisms and a high salt content.
